What to do if you need to temper a manual cutting tool for woodworking or homemade knives, but the hearth is not at hand?
There are three options. The first is to buy a forge. The second is to make a hearth with your own hands. The third is to use the advice of the author and do an express hardening tool at home.

It is clear that the use of blacksmith gas forge allows you to get a quality result. But not everyone has the opportunity to buy it or make it on their own.
Therefore, express hardening (or in other words, quick hardening) of a tool is one of the solutions to the problem.
The main stages of work
To perform express hardening at home, you will need a metal can (for example, from under the paint) and charcoal.
All that needs to be done is to cut a hole in the jar using a metal crown.
After that, we fill the container with charcoal. From above we spray with the ignition fluid so that the coal flames up faster. And set it on fire.
When the charcoal burns out and there is sufficient temperature inside the can, you can begin to harden the cutting tool or knife.
Through the round “window” we place the instrument inside the can, heat it to the desired temperature and cool it in water or used oil.
